1 in 4 black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, and a man of African descent is 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer than men of other races. Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in Nigeria and the leading cause of cancer deaths in Nigerian men. However, very little or nothing is being said about prostate cancer in Nigeria.
More often, a lot is heard and done about breast cancer and others through direct government intervention, NGO’s advocacy. So much awareness is focused on breast cancer in Nigeria but very little about prostate health. Prostate cancer is always missing, while several men die in silence and pain because their prostate cancer was discovered at late stages, while early detection, according to medical experts, gives high chances of survival.
Current data suggest that at least 15 Nigerian men die every day due to prostate cancer, resulting in about 5,475 deaths yearly, with 13,078 new cases recorded, these numbers could be more due to lack of accurate data on prostate health in Nigeria. Despite this troubling indices, there is still public quiet about prostate cancer, with a lot of people unaware of the disease and its risk factors.
Heritage Pacesetters Foundation (HPF) is proud to host a life-saving initiative – the Prostate Health Awareness Seminar, aimed at educating and empowering men with the knowledge and tools to combat prostate cancer through early detection.
This free event will bring together 1,000 men from across Nigeria, and will feature specialist health professionals, public health experts, and health commissioners from three South-West states of Nigeria.
This seminar is fully sponsored by HPF and is completely free for participants.
